These seeds require stratification. If sowing directly in the fall, artificial stratification isn’t necessary as the natural winter cold will fulfill this need.
Cold Stratification:
1. Place seeds in a plastic bag with a small amount of moist sand, vermiculite, or a damp paper towel. Ensure the medium is damp but not soaked.
2. Seal the bag and refrigerate for 30 days at 34-40°F.
3. Check periodically to ensure the medium remains moist.

It’s generally not recommended to start Lance-Leaf Coreopsis seeds indoors, as they tend to establish best when sown directly outdoors.
If starting indoors, begin 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost.
After stratification, sow seeds about 1/8 inch deep in seed trays with a well-draining mix. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface, as they need light to germinate.
Maintain a soil temperature of 65-70°F. Germination usually occurs within 10-20 days.
Thin seedlings to one per cell, and gradually expose them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.
Direct sowing is recommended for Lance-Leaf Coreopsis.
Sow seeds outdoors in late fall for natural stratification over winter, or in early spring.
Choose a sunny, well-draining site. Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and lightly press into the soil.
Keep the soil moist until germination, which typically occurs within 10-20 days in spring.
Light: Requires full sun to thrive and bloom prolifically.
Soil: Adaptable to sandy, rocky, and loamy soils but must have excellent drainage. It can tolerate poor soil and even dry conditions.
Water: Water seedlings regularly until they are established. Once mature, Lance-Leaf Coreopsis is drought-tolerant and only requires watering during prolonged dry spells.
Fertilization: Generally not needed unless soil is very poor. Excess fertilizer can reduce blooming.
Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms. You can also trim the plant back mid-summer to promote a second flush of blooms.
