Start your seeds in cell trays or small pots with moist potting soil 2 to 3 weeks before your last local spring frost.
Keep the soil evenly moist and temperatures above 65ºF and seeds will sprout in 10 to 15 days.
Provide light with a sunny windowsill or under grow lights until the seedlings reach 3 inches tall.
Before transplanting outdoors, harden off seedlings for several days. Do this by taking them outside during the day and bringing them in at night (Outside temps should be above 50°F when you start this process).
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spaced 2 inches apart, directly into prepared garden beds 1 to 2 weeks after your last local spring frost.
Keep the soil well-watered until the seedlings sprout and then thin them out so they are spaced 6 inches apart.
Once they grow to be 6 inches tall thin out once more so they are spaced a minimum of 24 inches apart.
Prepare your garden bed in an area that receives full sun with well-draining soil.
These plants prefer full sun in cold climates or partial sun in hot climates.
Excessive heat and sunlight can scorch the leaves.
They need well-draining soil since they do not like too much water. Drought and deer resistant.
Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming throughout the growing season.
Spider Flower is primarily grown for its ornamental flowers. You can harvest the flowers for cut flower arrangements by cutting the stems just as the flowers begin to open. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the plant’s stems at a time to ensure continued blooming.
